Islam is present throughout the Moroccan architecture,
but it is not the only factor on the contrary, there are many
influences that have allowed such a diversity of style.
The regional climate, history with Spain and Europe, the
country's resources, trade flows from the Sahara and the
Mediterranean as well as ancient local traditions dating back
before the first Muslim influences, all these factors have
contributed to put in contact with many styles.
To the east of the chain of Atlas, where the land is dry
and desert naturally has imposed the use of non-baked bricks,
which led to gross architectures which weaken rapidly with time.
To the west, water and wood are not a rarity, the plains
are watered, there is the cork oak and large slopes covered with
forests of cedars and junipers. The buildings benefit from raw
materials to decorate homes and consolidate. It is in these
areas that major cities were built and that we find the famous
buildings of the imperial cities.
Other sites like Atlas and the southern plains rich have
about them a privileged military architecture dating back far in
history, at a time when large Moroccan dynasties are created and
where the land was the place where all conflicts and all
conquests of power.
Thus were born castles (Ksour) and the most famous citadels
known as the Kasbah. In the mountains, you can even find fully
fortified villages and east of Marrakech, it is still possible
to admire Kasbahs of the Glaoui, Tazerte and Taffoultoute.
